Rakher Upobash

The Fasting of the Rakh

“Rakher Upobash”, which literally translates to “The fasting of the Rakh” is a worshipping ritual, which is organized every year in the sanctuary of Baba Lucknath. The prayers take place during the last fifteen days of the Bengali month Kartik, and is attended by the followers of the Hindu religion.

During this praying ritual, the believers go through a day long fasting, and keeps praying for the good health and enlightenment of their near and dear ones. A separate lamp is lit for each dear one. In the evening, all the lamps are lit simultaneously, and the ritual commences.

A strange, enchanting tune and mesmerizing lights bathe the entire sanctuary terrace with an out worldly beauty, and brings serenity to everyone present. The prayers of the believers culminates at Baba Lucknath’s ashram with the tradition of breaking the fast with a meal comprised of fruits.

Due to the Corona pandemic, this year the attendance was much lighter than past years, but still many believers from across the nation attended the sacred event with masks and hopeful hearts.
